Unmo, Sweden’s largest community for the restaurant sector, has released an in-depth market survey revealing a strong sense of pride and dedication among restaurant professionals. The survey, which collected feedback from hundreds of industry members, underscores both the deep commitment of those working in the sector and the prevailing public underestimation of its importance.
Pride and Community Within the Industry
A significant 92% of respondents expressed immense pride in their roles within the restaurant industry. The survey highlights that the most rewarding aspects of their work include the camaraderie with colleagues, interactions with guests, and the opportunity to engage with their passion for the culinary arts.
Strong Sense of Industry Community
This indicates that 81% of professionals feel a strong sense of community within the industry. For many, the connection with colleagues and opportunities for personal development are pivotal in maintaining their commitment to the profession. Additionally, 76% of respondents believe there are ample opportunities for growth and advancement within the industry.
Public Perception and Challenges
Despite these positive sentiments, the survey reveals a troubling disconnect with the public perception of the industry. Approximately 39% of respondents feel that their work is viewed negatively by those outside the sector. Common reactions to discussions about their profession include questions such as, “What are you going to do next?”, “Isn’t it tough?”, and “When will you get a real job?”. These responses highlight a lack of recognition for the restaurant industry as a legitimate and long-term career path.
A Sector of Significant Importance
In Sweden, the restaurant industry employs around 200,000 individuals, a sector that, despite its considerable size and contribution to the economy, often faces prejudice and misunderstanding. Despite these challenges, there is a profound passion and unwavering dedication among industry professionals.
Calls for Industry Improvement
Johan Mårtensson from Unmo notes, “The survey clearly demonstrates the immense pride and strong sense of community within the restaurant industry. However, it also reveals frustration that the profession is frequently perceived as temporary or less valuable. We aim to spotlight the skill and enthusiasm that contribute to creating exceptional dining experiences. It is high time for the public to recognise the industry’s significant value.”
Desire for Positive Change
This also identifies a strong desire within the industry for improvements in wages, work contracts, and stress levels. Key challenges for industry leaders include personnel management, talent acquisition, and time constraints.
Nathalie Jörnheim, Community Manager at Unmo, adds, “We view this survey as an opportunity to enhance cohesion within the industry and to showcase the vibrant community that already exists. Our goal is to be a catalyst for positive change and to demonstrate that the restaurant industry offers career opportunities, expertise, and creativity. It is an essential sector that deserves greater appreciation.”
Unmo’s Commitment
Unmo remains dedicated to elevating the industry’s reputation through various initiatives and features on its platform. The aim is to shift public perceptions and highlight the restaurant sector as a valuable and enduring career choice.
