Germany has opposed Türkiye’s bid to secure EU recognition for döner kebab as a traditional product. In response, Bereket Döner has released an academic study affirming döner’s origins as a cornerstone of Turkish heritage.
During a press event in Istanbul on 5th December, Bereket Döner presented its findings, which aim to strengthen Türkiye’s case for the European Commission’s approval.
“Our research demonstrates that döner is deeply rooted in Turkish history and culture,” explained Mevlüt Ceyhun Tekdemir, Vice Chairman of Bereket Döner’s Board. “From Takiyeddin Efendi’s 16th-century mechanical drawings to insights from Evliya Çelebi, our evidence leaves no doubt about döner’s origins. We trust the European Commission to recognise this heritage appropriately.”
The study, Türkiye’s World-Famous Delicacy: Döner, features historical artefacts and engravings from the Ottoman era, underlining döner’s role as both a culinary and cultural icon.
Uniting Cultures Through Cuisine
“Döner is not about division; it’s about unity,” Tekdemir said. “It’s a culinary tradition that brings people together, blending cultures and tastes in a unique way.”
Bereket Döner also announced plans to expand its Döner Point chain across Europe, beginning in Germany. The initiative aims to bring the authentic taste of Turkish döner to more people.
“We’re excited to bring the true taste of Turkish döner to Europe,” Tekdemir remarked. “Our expansion strategy reflects our commitment to preserving and sharing this cultural treasure with the world.”
Through these efforts, Bereket Döner seeks to protect Turkish döner’s legacy and promote its cultural importance globally.
