Global Pioneer in Digital Engineering Takes Bold Steps Towards Sustainability
Persistent Systems proudly announces it has achieved carbon neutrality for Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions) across its global operations for FY23-24, accomplishing this milestone a year ahead of schedule. This significant achievement, verified by DNV Business Assurance India Private Limited, highlights Persistent’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and reinforces its role in supporting clients’ environmental objectives.
Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals
Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the urgent global need to limit planetary warming to 1.5°C, Persistent’s achievement solidifies its reputation as a socially responsible enterprise. The company’s extensive carbon management strategy centres on improving energy efficiency by investing in renewable energy and creating energy-efficient infrastructure, which is certified by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
Significant Strides in Renewable Energy Adoption
Persistent has made notable progress in renewable energy and resource management, achieving:
- 42% Reduction in Emissions: Accomplished through two windmills (2.1 MW each) and 2 MW solar rooftops.
- 39% of Total Energy Usage from Renewable Sources: With 44% of this usage in India.
- 16% of Renewable Energy Needs Met by Self-Generated RECs: Sourced from its windmills.
- 45% Coverage of I-RECs: For leased and overseas facilities.
- 99% Waste Recycling: Across all operations.
- 121,035 Trees Planted: Contributing to carbon sequestration.
- 28.3% Reuse of Treated Wastewater: In owned campuses.
Investment in High-Quality Carbon Credits
To mitigate Scope 1 emissions, Persistent has invested in high-quality carbon credits certified by VERRA, while simultaneously lowering Scope 2 emissions through renewable energy sourcing and the acquisition of International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs).
Embedding Sustainability Across Operations
Persistent is dedicated to driving renewable energy adoption, optimising energy use, and collaborating with communities to combat climate change. By actively engaging employees and stakeholders, the company integrates sustainability into its core operations, ensuring a lasting impact. Moreover, Persistent’s investments in renewable energy projects and carbon offset initiatives are geared towards reducing emissions and supporting environmental initiatives, with a long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2050, in line with the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) roadmap.
Leadership Commitment to Environmental Responsibility
Dhanashree Bhat, Chief Operating Officer of Persistent, stated: “As the world faces increasing environmental challenges, we recognise our responsibility to contribute to a sustainable future. Our commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) issues transcends regulatory requirements — it is a strategic journey aimed at delivering long-term value for our clients, communities, and the environment.
